We were all very impressed by the fortifications around Charleston, SC. Fort Moultrie, on Sullivan's Island, and Fort Sumpter, in the middle of Charleston Harbor, provide crossfire protection for the city. The cannonball-deflecting palmetto logs that form Fort Moultrie's walls are so famous that South Carolina nicknamed itself after them: the Palmetto State! | |
