We had 2 particular interests in mind as we explored the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. Lori graduated high school in Hoosick Falls, NY not far from where we were staying, so we were interested in visiting family there and seeing some places where Lori went to school and played softball. We were also interested in visiting Lake Placid where the US hosted the winter Olympics in 1980...and in 1932 (I didn't know that before we got there).
Our BBQ with Lori's aunt and uncle and cousins in Hoosick Falls was a wonderful way to share our Sunday afternoon and Lori got to catch up with her cousins while we all got to meet them for the first time. Michael and Mariana couldn't play enough games outside with Luke and we all left with full bellies and relationships renewed. Thanks for the BBQ!
We endured a couple rainy days while in the Adirondacks, but were well rewarded with glorious sunshine for our day exploring Lake Placid. Lori found a good hike up Mt. Jo that was doable for all of us. With the recent rain, the trail was a bit muddy in many places and much to our amazement, the top of the mountain was brimming with mosquitoes that must have been out for vengeance after being cooped up by the rain...our stay on the summit of Mt. Jo was spectacular, but brief! Our hike was a bit over 2 miles all together and everyone navigated the rocks and mud without major incident!
We toured the Olympic Training Center with the operations manager, Jared, who gave us great insights on how the training center supports the athletes who will represent us in international competitions....lots of inspiring and devoted athletes were there while we were in town and many more will soon be coming to train for the summer. The training center in Colorado Springs is the parent organization for Lake Placid, but Lake Placid has a unique mission supporting winter sport athletes while Colorado Springs focuses on summer indoor athletes (and the third training center in CA supports summer outdoor athletes). We topped off our day in Lake Placid catching up with Liane (Lori's friend from high school) and her family over a terrific BBQ complete with watermelon and potato salad! Thanks Liane!
