Northern New Hampshire is home to the White Mountains National Forest and Mt. Washington which is the highest peak in the Northeastern US at 6,288ft. Mt Washington has had recorded winds of 231 mph and records about 110 days every year with hurricane strength winds! We didn't hike to the top of Mt. Washington, but we did enjoy the view with the historic and massive Mt. Washington Resort in the foreground. The resort was one of a couple dozen in the mountains years and years ago and received international acclaim in 1944 when it hosted the Bretton Woods Conference that laid the foundation for the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank following World War II.
Our keenest pursuit was looking for moose that roam this area....we didn't see any, but we did make several hikes and took a couple drives to search them out. While we didn't sight any moose, we were treated a beautiful sunset....somewhere there was a moose watching the same sunset! We endured the biting black flies in Maine with scores of pin-sized red sores on our arms, legs and heads....and now we've survived mosquito season in New Hampshire too. Michael finished our hike to Ripley Falls with a walnut sized mosquito bite on his head...such a warrior to battle on! The White Mountains are definitely a hiker's paradise with dozens of great hikes through the National Forest...not to mention the Appalachian Trail passes right through as well...we hiked a half-mile of the Appalachian Trail to get to Ripley Falls.
